Goldenheart Day Care – Behavioral Guidance Policy (MN Rule 9502.0395 Subpart 1 & 2)
This document explains the positive behavior guidance methods used at Goldenheart Day Care in accordance with Minnesota Rule 9502.0395. Our goal is to guide children using respectful, age-appropriate, and developmentally appropriate techniques that promote safety, emotional growth, and positive social skills.
Infants
Respond promptly to crying and provide comfort, nurturing, and reassurance.
Redirect infants with safe toys, movement, or soothing interaction.
Use calm voices, gentle touch, and consistent routines to create security.
Meet physical needs quickly (feeding, diapering, sleep) to reduce distress.
Toddlers
Use redirection by guiding children toward another safe activity or toy.
Provide simple explanations and model appropriate behavior.
Use positive reinforcement and praise when children make good choices.
Offer choices when possible to help toddlers develop independence.
Preschoolers
Encourage children to use words to express feelings and solve conflicts.
Use reminders of classroom rules and expectations.
Provide brief separation from the activity when needed so the child can calm down.
Praise cooperation, sharing, and positive problem-solving.
School-Age Children
Encourage discussion about behavior and appropriate choices.
Help children reflect on actions and learn problem-solving skills.
Reinforce positive behavior through encouragement and recognition.
Use logical consequences related to the behavior when needed.
Prohibited Discipline Methods
No physical punishment or corporal punishment.
No emotional abuse, humiliation, or threats.
No withholding food, naps, or bathroom use as punishment.
No punishment that frightens, shames, or harms a child.
This policy is followed by all staff and volunteers at Goldenheart Day Care. All caregivers are expected to use positive guidance, maintain patience, and support each child’s emotional and behavioral development.
